Carol Workshop at the Howard Arms
Saturday 16 November 2019, 9.30 am – 4.30 pm
Howard Arms, Brampton, near Carlisle
Leader – Ian Russell | Organised by Stones Barn on behalf of Maddy Prior
The workshop is open to both singers and instrumentalists (esp. strings & woodwind), with music and words for the traditional carols provided. It will help participants learn the singing parts of twelve or more favourite carols from village traditions in South Yorkshire and the Peak District, and instrumentalists will be able to learn to play the accompaniments in parts. No special expertise is required, just enthusiasm for the carols and a willingness to join in. All the carols will be pitched to fall within the range of normal voices, as in the pubs where many of these traditions thrive. Based on the manuscripts used by village carol bands, the arrangements have been specially prepared and edited by Ian and are taken from The Sheffield Book of Village Carols. and The Derbyshire Book of Village Carols.
Here are the carols we will be singing:
- Awake, Arise, Good Christians (South Yorkshire)
- Hark, Hark! Hark, Hark! (South Yorkshire)
- Liverpool (South Yorkshire)
- Three Harks (Coal Aston, Derbyshire)
- T’Owd Virgin (Eyam, Derbyshire)
- Peace o’er the World (Castleton, Derbyshire)
- A Song for the Time (Ecclesfield, South Yorkshire)
- Belmont (Ingbirchworth, South Yorkshire)
- Hail Smiling Morn (South Yorkshire)
- Mount Moriah (South Yorkshire)
- Diadem (South Yorkshire)
- Merry Christmas (South Yorkshire)
Why not come and join us? All welcome!
