Village Carols Workshops at Brampton near Carlisle
Saturday 19 November 2022
The Howard Arms, 10.00 am – 4.00 pm
Leader – Ian Russell. Organised by Stones Barn on behalf of Maddy Prior.
The workshop is open to both singers and instrumentalists (esp. strings & woodwind), with music and words for the traditional carols provided. It will help participants learn the singing parts of twelve favourite carols from village traditions in South Yorkshire and the Peak District, and instrumentalists will be able to learn to play the accompaniments in parts. No special expertise is required, just enthusiasm for the carols and a willingness to join in. All the carols will be pitched to fall within the range of normal voices, as in the pubs where many of these traditions thrive. Based on the manuscripts used by village carol bands, the arrangements have been specially prepared and edited by Ian and are taken from The Sheffield Book of Village Carols and The Derbyshire Book of Village Carols.
Here’s what we’re singing:
- Old Christians (Worrall)
- Good News (South Yorkshire)
- Pentonville (South Yorkshire)
- Malin Bridge (South Yorkshire)
- On the Dew Besprinkled Lawn (Dore/ Eyam)
